Nigerian Police: Labour Party House of Assembly Candidate Hired Thugs To Kill PDP Agent in Ebonyi

Nweke, a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, was tortured to death by suspected political thugs during the March 18 governorship and House of Assembly elections in Ebonyi State.

The Ebonyi State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested a Labour Party House of Assembly aspirant for Ezza North Constituency, Leonard Kelechi Nwali and three others in connection with the killing of one Peter Nweke.

Nweke, a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, was tortured to death by suspected political thugs during the March 18 governorship and House of Assembly elections in Ebonyi State.

SaharaReporters had reported that Nweke, who was chairman of PDP in Umuezeokaoha Ward in the Ezza North Local Government Area was killed while working as his party’s agent in the community.

It had been reported that two chieftains of the PDP and members of other opposition political parties were gruesomely assassinated during the last general elections in Ebonyi State, controlled by All Progressives Congress-led Governor David Umahi.

Disclosing the arrest in statement issued on Friday in Abakaliki, the State capital, the Command’s Spokesperson, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, revealed that all the suspects had confessed to the crime during an interrogation.

He gave the names of other suspects as Ifeanyi Nwokpuku, Onyebuchi Chita and Aloke Obinna who were all from the same Council area.

According to the statement, the Labour Party aspirant, upon interrogation told police that he hired the other three suspects who were meant to torture the late Nweke. However, he died in the process.

The police said Nweke posed a threat to his political ambition, because of that LP candidate, had to contact one Akwasi of Umuezeoka, who spearheaded the torture that eventually resulted in the death of the PDP Chieftain.

“The second suspect, Onyebuchi Chita, of Nkomoro community, in the same local government area, confessed to have brought in the killers from Nkomoro into Ogboji community, where Peter Nweke was killed.

“The third suspect, Aloke Obinna, of Ogboji community, confessed to have given his motorcycle to one Onyebuchi Chita for escape after the incident.

“While Ifeanyi Nwokpuku, the fourth suspect, of Ogboji community in Ezza North LGA, conspired with one Sampson Nweke, who pointed Peter Nweke out to the killers.”

Onovwakpoyeya said the suspects would be arraigned at the end of investigations.
